Who We Are

The Western States Servant Band was born in late 1992, in response to a desire to have talented youth (rather than adults) lead music at major gatherings of Christian teenagers.  That first year, 24 young people auditioned, from which 13 were chosen for band membership.  As of late 2007, 59 musically-gifted youth from nine different states have held positions in the band.  In all, the WSSB has provided leadership at more than 70 events, including youth gatherings, school assemblies, worship services, leadership training schools, commissioning events, and tour appearances.  They have recorded five CD's (they are currently recording their 6th!), appeared at a total of eight national or western states Lutheran youth gatherings, and have been invited overseas three times (Japan, Sweden & China).  For ten years running, they have led spiritual emphasis week at Gloria Dei Lutheran School (Sacramento CA).  The band is directed by Pastor Steve Olson, who co-founded the group.

Youth between the ages of 14 and 21, who are active members of a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America are eligible for the Servant Band.  For more information, click on the "Auditions" button on the left side of this page.

Our Mission

"The dual mission of the Western States Servant Band is to give praise to God through the hearts, hands and voices of young Lutheran Christians, and to empower gifted youth to become dynamic musicians, leaders and witnesses for Christ."
